Brave New World

Lockdown posting

You don’t need me to tell you that in a matter of hours New Zealand will be on pandemic alert level 4, and lockdown. This… leaves me with rather a lot of time on my hands, as the job I had as of last week was not one I could do from home. So, what to do?

Well, the answer as always is “a lot of reading” but besides that I also want to write. But not, if possible, directly about the pandemic. Instead, I intend to post about tools I’m learning (whether useful or silly), projects I’m working on, and books I’ve read.

I’m also considering doing a little bit of work with pandemic data from New Zealand specifically. This is a tough one—as a statistician the temptation is there, but a) I’m not a epidemiologist, what do I know, and b) if I keep at it as people start to die it’s going to be unpleasant for me, personally. Instead, I think I’ll refrain from making visualisations, models, or dashboards, and instead look at basic data cleaning stuff. The New Zealand Herald’s Github has a repo where they’re collating the data released by the Ministry of Health in a more usable form, so even though I don’t much use Github anymore I might help there.

See you on the other side!
